AI Agents: from hype to real value with a strong digital strategy

AI agents are the talk of the town. They promise to revolutionise productivity, customer service and decision-making. But as is often the case with new technologies, expectations run higher than reality.

What are the pitfalls of placing blind faith in AI agents? And how can you actually succeed by integrating them into a well-thought-out digital strategy?
AI agents offer enormous opportunities, provided you approach them in the right way. Don’t start with the technology, but with your goals, processes and people. With a well-thought-out digital strategy and a critical eye on what AI can and cannot do, you can make a real difference.
The hype surrounding AI agents: too good to be true?
In 2025 and early 2026, AI agents were hailed as the next big step in automation. Companies invested heavily, but the results often fell short of the promises. According to TechCrunch, AI agents in 2025 were still far from being as autonomous as hoped: “Agents failed to live up to the hype in 2025, but a big reason for that is because it’s hard to connect them to the systems where work actually happens” .
The NH Journal also emphasises that these systems are “unreliable, brittle and heavily dependent on human supervision”. AI agents are more like junior staff who work quickly and confidently, but often make mistakes. The reality is that AI agents are no magic wand. Without the right preparation and integration, they get stuck in pilot projects or deliver disappointing results.
The importance of clean data and interoperability
Another major issue is the overestimated capabilities of AI agents. They can perform impressive tasks, but are entirely dependent on clean data and seamless integration (interoperability) with existing systems. Without this foundation, they become an expensive playground rather than a valuable asset.
AI requires reliable, structured data to function properly. Outdated or unstructured data leads to unreliable results. Furthermore, AI agents must be able to integrate with your CRM, ERP and other tools. If systems do not communicate with one another, true automation does not materialise; instead, only fragmented solutions emerge. Only with a solid digital infrastructure can AI agents deliver on their promise.
Digital maturity is crucial
But human oversight remains crucial too: AI can recognise patterns, but it does not understand context or ethics. A chatbot that gives customers the wrong advice, or an algorithm that reinforces biases, does more harm than good to your brand.
If there is no clear digital strategy against which performance is measured and improvements made. If there is no clear ownership and if the processes are not in order, AI agents will not make the expected positive difference.
The TIMAF Digital Maturity Model helps to determine whether, among other things, the data and interoperability, the strategy, governance and processes are sufficiently mature to enable the optimal deployment of AI agents.
AI as a successful component of a digital strategy
Fortunately, there are success stories too. Companies that deploy AI agents strategically are certainly seeing results. Consider:
More efficient processes – AI takes over repetitive tasks, allowing staff to focus on valuable work.
Better customer experiences – Smart chatbots and personalised recommendations boost satisfaction and loyalty.
Data-driven decisions – AI analyses large datasets faster than humans, enabling you to identify trends and risks sooner.
The secret? Start with your strategy, not the tool. A good digital strategy ensures:
Clear objectives – What do you want to achieve with AI? Cut costs? Improve customer service? Accelerate innovation?
Process optimisation – AI only works if your processes are streamlined and digitally ready.
A balance between people and machines – AI supports employees, it doesn’t replace them. Invest in training and change management.
