TIMAF European Best Practices Award 2009

At the HartmanEVENT, October 8th 2009, Beeld en Geluid received the first TIMAF European Best Practices Award 2009 for their Waisda? project.Beeld en Geluid is the Dutch national audiovisual archive, with 0ver 700,000 hours of radio, television, film, and music. Waisda? is a video crowdsourcing initiative, where visitors can tag television programs like in a game. This improves the searchability of the audiovisual archives. The principle behind this, is that if more ‘players’ add a similar description it is probably a correct description. This principle has been used successfully for photo collections, but this Waisda? is the first initiative to tag audiovisual content. Waisda? is a Beeld en Geluid project in co-operation with public broadcasting company KRO.
Waisda? won the TIMAF European Best Practices Award 2009, because the jury was impressed by the innovative way it uses crowdsourcing for improving retrieval.
The TIMAF European Best Practices Award 2009 jury consisted of Erik M. Hartman, Adriaan Bloem (CMS Watch), Jelle van Egmond (Sourcesense), Michiel Hazen (Ordina), Remco Nabuurs (IPROFS), Ron Zwetsloot (BNG/Cascadis), and Sebastiaan de Jong (Philips).
The other TIMAF European Best Practices Award 2009 nominees were Rabobank, Gemeente Den Haag, SNS Bank, Wienerberger, and WritingTravellers.
